In August, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released a series of memos obtained from the FBI and its Joint Terrorism Task Force, which makes possible the collaboration between federal and local law enforcement agencies. The memos confirmed what the ACLU had been suspecting and working to uncover--that government agencies have been spying on activists critical of the Bush administration and its war.
The memos revealed that under the ruse of finding terrorists, the FBI has monitored meetings and protests in several states, including ones in Michigan that were led by groups fighting for affirmative action, objecting to the war and defending animal rights. The FBI has also been keeping tabs on a white supremacist group in Michigan, and in Colorado the FBI has been monitoring the work of American Indian Movement in Colorado (AIM).
