Chicago's politics of containment.(letters)(Letter to the Editor)
Upon reading Mick Dumke's article on mayoral politics in the city of Chicago, I am glad to see that a magazine such as yours does not fear to print stories highlighting the "other" side of the political machine. Mr. Wilen (from the National Center of Poverty Law) is correct in stating that the devil is truly in the details. Programs like the Chicago Housing Authority's "Plan for Transformation" does nothing but renew a politics of containment that accept "qualified" people of color, keeping prime real estate areas safe for potential white and affluent residents. In reference to schools, Renaissance 2010 continues to support such containment through the development of "new" schools for the new residents. As argued by organizations like PURE and ACORN, Ren2010 has very little to do with education and everything to do with gentrification in the name of development.
