Following the low-carb flameout, the glycemic index may be poised to be the next big dieting trend. Or at least some people are betting on it.
A slew of new books claim that the secret to permanent weight loss lies in the glycemic index _ a way of measuring a food's impact on our blood sugar levels.
The glycemic index, or GI, actually has been around for nearly 25 years. But best-sellers like "Sugar Busters" and the more recent "The New Glucose Revolution" have propelled the GI to center stage.
NutriSystem is using the GI to lure dieters into its weight loss centers with a new plan based on this approach. And an array of new food products _ from pasta to nutrition bars _ are beginning to boast their "low GI" ranking on package labels.
Despite the buzz, there appears to be just as many critics as there are proponents of the GI.
