SAN FRANCISCO _ Making a trade they would have preferred to execute years ago, the Giants sent third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo to the Los Angeles Angels for outfielder Steve Finley on Wednesday.

The Giants have spent years coveting Finley. They tried to sign him as a free agent before the 2003 season, when he opted to stay with the Arizona Diamondbacks. San Francisco believed it had engineered a trade for Finley in July 2004, but Finley, exercising a contractual right and citing the Giants' lack of a closer, rejected the deal and went instead to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last off-season, the Giants offered Finley a three-year, $18 million …
