The S-Class and Eddie Murphy
Concerning the 2007 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (Nov. 28), I recently watched the old Eddie Murphy film Coming to America. In that film Murphy and his royal family are driven around in a Mercedes. These cars were a clear statement: huge, distinctive, black and imposing, to be treated with respect. That was 1988. The new S-Class, despite gadgets galore, is lost in today's pack of prominent flagship cars. No wonder M-B brought back the Maybach. It's an effort to regain the status lost by the "common'' Mercedes.

The new S-Class rear end is almost as ugly as the BMW 7 Series' and will allow its owners to nonverbally state, "I have more money than taste.''

Your Nov. 21 news story about BMW build-ing a 1973 2002tii from the parts bin at an estimated cost of $97,000 brought back memories.
