Women, especially those with skin problems, are more and more being drawn to cosmetics with pharmaceutical properties known as cosmeceuticals. In Japan, Dokutazu kosume (pharmaceutical cosmetics) have been developed from the advice of doctors and their knowledge gained from treating patients.

Dr. Ci:Labo Co., a pioneering firm in developing such products in Japan, was set up in 1999 by Yoshinori Shirono, a dermatologist in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo.
