Dec. 16--San Diego Gas & Electric filed a request with state regulators yesterday to build a major new transmission line through the Imperial Valley to San Diego County.
In the filing with the California Public Utilities Commission, SDG&E said the new line, called the Sunrise Powerlink, is needed to maintain reliability of the region's power supply, promote renewable energy sources and reduce energy costs.
It would service about 650,000 homes, the company said.
SDG&E said the link would give it access to geothermal and solar power sources in the Imperial Valley, and wind and other renewable resources in San Diego County. And it would help SDG&E meet PUC goals to procure 20 percent of electric retail sales from renewable sources by 2010, according …
