Haydn: Harpsichord Sonatas From Before 1770.

Gudrun Dengler's recording features works dating from the period 1765 to 1776, but the concentration is on Haydn's published oeuvre of the early 1770s. The sonatas Hob.XVI:23, 24 and 26 belong to a set of six sonatas (Hob.XVI:21-6) dedicated to Prince Nikolaus Esterhizy, most of them written in 1773 and published in 1774. The fourth sonata recorded here (Hob.XVI:27) is from Haydn's next |set of six', the sonatas of |anno 1776'. These works are some of the best of Haydn's |public' sonatas of the period, which although intended for an amateur music public are nonetheless immensely witty, varied, and sophisticated.
