SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTRUCTION company Group Five has been awarded its largest project to date in West Africa, having been granted a US$90mn contract for the design, supply and construction of a 180MW gas-fired power plant in Nigeria. It will be supplied by General Electric and will be called Ibom Power Company.

The Ibom Power Company was formed in 2001 as an independent power plant (IPP) to enhance power generation in the southeast region of Nigeria. This would be done through the existing National Grid and eventually provide power to the proposed 100,000 barrels per day Akwa Ibom Refinery and Industrial area, adjacent to the IPP.
