The future of Ferrari design got a boost, thanks in part to a just-completed design competition, New Concepts of the Myth.
Of 20 design models created by students from around the world, four were chosen winners by one of the most discriminating design juries of all time.
Their charge was to create 1:4-scale Ferrari models that offered alternatives to mid-engined eight-cylinder and front-engined 12-cylinder car designs. Designers had complete creative freedom with the understanding the designs "retain the recognizable features and values'' of the Ferrari marque. The contest was co-sponsored by Alcoa, suppliers of Ferrari's aluminum parts.
Judges included Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, vice president Piero Ferrari, general manager Jean Todt, the new concept design chief Donato Coco, Sergio Pininfarina and American designer Frank Stephenson, who recently moved from Ferrari to head Fiat and Lancia's Style Centre.
