Our first snowstorm hit just before Thanksgiving, earlier in the year than usual. Snowflakes had barely started fluttering down when I chanced to glance out of the newsroom windows atop One AutoWeek Tower at the familiar tangle of off-ramps, on-ramps and highways below. And there it was: a white Chevy panel van stopped on the shoulder of an overpass facing the wrong way, freaking out oncoming motorists.
Behold, the first spinout of the season!
This first pirouette of the hapless is an annual rite here in the colder states. For me, it's a comforting sign that the holiday season is well and truly upon us.
It's not that I take joy from the sight of every unlucky goofball who manages to twirl himself harmlessly but ignominiously into a ditch. Okay, I take a little joy. But hey, they do eventually get towed out, which makes them happy, too.
It's something more: The first spinout of the season signals that we've arrived at a time for reflection, a time for giving thanks for the special gifts that we of Car Nation are lucky enough to enjoy.
