Infiniti gets GT-R
The next-generation Nissan Skyline GT-R sports car will be sold as an Infiniti in the United States, sources tell our sister publication Automotive News. The current generation was sold under the Nissan brand in Japan, and company executives have debated whether to sell it as a Nissan or an Infiniti when the car makes its appearance in U.S. showrooms in 2008.
Nissan showed its most recent version, the GT-R Proto (for prototype) concept, at the Tokyo Motor Show in October ("The Talk of Tokyo,'' Oct. 31); the production premiere is slated for the 2007 Tokyo show. The 2008 model will carry a very Infiniti-like sticker price of about $65,000. Nissan has targeted annual U.S. sales at about 1500 cars for the all-wheel-drive, twin-turbo, 400-plus-hp sports car.
