Patients with sub-clinical hypothyroidism are at increased risk of congestive heart failure (CHF), according to US research.

An association between overt hypothyroidism and cardiovascular disease has been widely recognised, but this is the first study to find an elevated cardiovascular risk in patients with a sub-clinical form of the disease.

The study included 2,730 people aged between 70 and 79 years. The researchers measured their baseline levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and identified those with TSH levels of 4.5mIU/L or greater as suffering from sub-clinical hypothyroidism.
