Dec. 8--The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) yesterday rejected a petition from cellular market leader Advanced Info Service to begin trials for third-generation (3G) phone services.
The regulator said a legal interpretation was needed before approval for 3G trials could be given.
But the NTC said that in principle, a plan submitted by AIS outlining technical specifications and a testing timeframe was approved.
AIS is the first mobile operator to have received consideration for 3G trials. Applications from number two DTAC and third-ranked TA Orange are also pending.
