Academic publishers have endorsed a new initiative from online bookseller Amazon, which will allow users to buy books in parts as small chapters or pages.
"Amazon Pages will give customers unusual flexibility in how they buy and read books," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO.
The service, built on the Search Inside the Book digitised book technology, will enable users to purchase online access to pages, sections or chapters of a book. Bezos describes the technology as "un-bundling" the buying and reading of books.
In stark contrast to its reaction to Google Print, the publishing industry is widely backing the move. "New distribution and readership models are essential for publishing. They create revenue streams and keep the industry dynamic," said Tim Harty, group marketing manager for legal publisher Sweet & Maxwell.
