Dec. 6--Eden Prairie-based Supervalu is reportedly trying to buy some -- or all -- of the nation's No. 2 grocery chain, Albertson's, a deal that could potentially double Supervalu's nationwide grocery empire and make it one the largest companies in America.

Supervalu officials declined to comment Monday on reports that it has teamed with investment firm Cerberus Capital Management and real estate specialist Kimco Realty on a bid for Albertson's, which had revenues of $40 billion last year. Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's has 2,500 supermarkets and drug stores in 31 states, and ranks as the 35th largest public company in the country.
