It often used to be that when a person bought some software he simply got a bunch of disks to keep.
They were easy to copy.
But trends such as selling software by subscription with frequent updates and selling software as a service may curb piracy.
With some types of services, the software is hosted remotely and users interact with it online.
"They don't get their hands on software so they can't pirate it," said Gartner software analyst Alvin Park, noting the evolution to Web services.
Subscriptions give software makers the chance to make a user periodically validate that he's paid for the applications on his PC. When only authorized users get their frequently issued product updates, pirates could find the software they have quickly becomes outmoded.
