In the theatrical game of hide-and-seek, one of the most exciting things to see flushed out into the open is the unconscious life of Homo sapiens. It's a hard thing to represent onstage, which is why playwrights often resort to conveying it through large and startling stage pictures. The title of Noah Haidle's exhilarating "Mr. Marmalade" (well directed by Michael Greif, at the Laura Pels) refers to the imaginary friend of a lively but neglected four-year-old called Lucy (Mamie Gummer, making her impressive Off Broadway debut). As played by the compelling Michael C. Hall, Mr. Marmalade is a buttoned-down, briefcase-toting simulacrum, one suspects, of Lucy's absent father. ...
