Dec. 3--The nation's Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurers plan to start their own bank as more consumers and their employers choose high-deductible health plans attached to savings accounts.
The Chicago-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association on Monday plans to announce that it will pursue a bank charter that will allow member plans to sell health savings accounts, flexible spending plans and other health reimbursement arrangements.
Many of the nation's Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies already offer some form of consumer-directed health plans. Such plans are like other health plans in that they offer networks of medical-care provider choices, but the consumer-directed models also set aside a defined amount of money…
