Feeding the Third Term Dragon.

THE small asides about a third term agenda has grown into a hysteria, with the clear prospect of it dominating the public space until 2007. That is really scary, and it is time we investigated what is feeding the dragon.

And the preliminary observation is that the third term agenda has become the battle-cry for all manner of interests who have one axe or the other to grind with President Obasanjo and it is becoming all too familiar: Give the dog its bad name; and hang, it will! For the rest of the citizenry who have been playing the lap-dog though , our predicament is understandable. After all, eternal vigilance is the price we pay for our freedom.

But more importantly, it also shows that Nigeria has not recovered from the physical and psychological bashing she took during the Abacha era. Nor is the late dictator the author of the self-perpetuation script. Permit me to note that the trick is indeed as old as politics, and since the modern era when …
