Byline: Steve Watkins
10 Mark Belnick stared down a possible decades-long sentence in the New York state prison system and won. His trust in the truth carried him through.
Belnick had worked for 28 years at New York City law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison before joining Tyco International as chief corporate counsel in 1998.
But in early 2002, problems with Tyco's top management came to light. Chief Executive Dennis Kozlowski and Chief Financial Officer Mark Swartz were eventually convicted of larceny and fraud.
Prosecutors also indicted Belnick, first accusing him of failing to disclose loans the firm gave him. When he wouldn't give in to pressure to plead guilty, prosecutors upped the ante by charging him with grand larceny and securities fraud.
Dark Days
He knew the case was baseless, but he faced the specter of 25 years in a maximum-security prison.
