Broadcom sees surging demand
Broadcom's CEO said world demand for digital devices will mean more buyers of its chips, used in portable video players. As multimedia reach cell phones, these markets will take off, he said, adding that Broadcom was partnering on different projects with Apple Computer and Samsung Electronics. Broadcom rose 2.5% to 47.59. Apple climbed 5.5% to 71.60.
Intel green-lights Israel chip plant
The No. 1 chipmaker has given the go-ahead to build a $3.5 bil wafer fabrication plant in Kiryat Gat, Israel. Construction should begin soon, and the plant's expected to be productive by late '08. The Israeli government is providing financial incentives to build the plant, Intel said, without being more specific. Intel rose 2% to 27.18.
** Bear Stearns raised its Q4 revenue estimate for Intel to $10.7 bil, up from $10.6 bil and above the $10.5 bil midpoint of Intel's own forecast range. Intel will offer a midquarter update next week.
