Jason Leffler joked that he couldn't find a ride for the 65th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix midget race, so he built his own car. Turns out both of them were good enough to win the 100-lap race at Irwindale Speedway in California.
Leffler became a repeat winner of USAC's season-ending midget race, having captured the first such race at Irwindale in 1999. Leffler took the lead when Dave Steele slowed with a failed battery, then held off Aaron Fike for the win.
Steele jumped Leffler and fellow front-row starter Tracy Hines at the green flag and led the first 52 laps. Steele is considered the best pavement-track racer in USAC.
Leffler is the only driver to win three straight USAC midget titles, doing so in 1997, 1998 and 1999 before moving to NASCAR.
Josh Wise, 22, completed his first USAC championship by finishing 178 points ahead of Jerry Coons Jr.
Wheldon lands
As it turns out Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon never left the Indy Racing League.
