Nasdaq stocks started modestly higher Wednesday, then pulled back to finish the day virtually unchanged.
The composite ended even, while the Nasdaq 100 eased 0.3%. Nasdaq volume closed higher and above its 50-day average.
Several retailers enjoyed red-letter days. Dress Barn hit an all-time high, zooming 4.78 to 33.38. The stock traded 6.6 million shares, vs. its average daily volume of about 400,000.
Before the open, the women's clothing retailer reported fiscal first-quarter profit of 64 cents a share, a 192% increase from a year ago and 24 cents above estimates. Revenue climbed 62% to $318.9 million, in line with views. The company forecast 2006 earnings between $1.90 and $1.95 a share. Analysts were looking for $1.65.
Gymboree surged 1.70 to 22.56 on 2 1/2 times its normal trade. The operator of more than 600 clothing stores for children and women announced a 22% gain in November same-store sales. The Retail-Clothing/Shoe group was one of the day's best performers, up 0.7%.
