Iraq: Yes, Senator, there is a strategy for victory. It's on the Web for you and every other American to see. Feel free to debate it, but don't deny its existence.
Harry Reid officially leads the Senate's Democrats and, in that role, can be said to speak for them. So they should be concerned he's making them look a bit slow on the uptake.
On Wednesday, while President Bush was on national TV explaining his strategy for defeating terrorists and building a viable nation in Iraq, and just as the White House posted a 35-page "National Strategy for Victory in Iraq" on its Web site, Reid issued one of the more obtuse statements we've heard from a major politician.
Even before Bush finished speaking, Reid declared that Bush "once again missed an opportunity to lay out a real strategy for success in Iraq that will bring our troops home."
We're not sure what Reid meant by "real strategy," but the "National Strategy" certainly fits the bill in our eyes. It defines goals, plus outlines the steps needed to achieve them. It sets out the benchmarks to measure success in the short, medium and long term. It also goes into detail to describe the military, political and economic obstacles to success and to note progress so far and the considerable work still to be done.
