Some readers were miffed. Others said the online subscriptions would never fly.
But two months after The New York Times launched TimesSelect, a for-pay service based on the paper's Op-Ed columnists, numbers of readers are paying for online content that used to be free.
The Times said in early November that about 135,000 Web surfers have signed up for TimesSelect. They're paying to access a bevy of Times columnists, including Maureen Dowd, Thomas Friedman and David Brooks.
TimesSelect started Sept. 19. Online subscribers pay $7.95 a month or $49.95 annually to read the paper's eight Op-Ed columnists and 14 other opinion writers. Perks include accessing archived news stories and video casts by columnists.
"We created a large user base in less than 60 days with people willing to pay a significant price," said Times president and general manager Scott Heekin-Canedy.
But the paper declines to disclose how much money it's making from TimesSelect for competitive reasons.
