The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has been accused of spurning the offer of extra money to improve the enforcement of asbestos regulations. The Asbestos Removal Con-tractors Association (ARCA) has repeatedly offered to pay more for asbestos removal licences to provide the HSE with more resources for site inspection and enforcement. Currently, asbestos contractors pay [pounds sterling]909 per year, but ARCA chief executive Terry Jago said members are willing to consider a substantial increase: "We feel they may support paying as much as [pounds sterling]5,000 or [pounds sterling]10,000. "It's in our interests to put money up front to increase enforcement," he added. "It's the best way to flush out the disreputable companies that buy work. At the moment it's a lottery as to whether or not their sites will be visited." The HSE inspected around 1,000 out of 44,000 notified asbestos removal sites last year - just over 2% of the total.
