DEERFIELD, IL -- The NutraSweet Co. has been given the goahead by the U.S. Food and Drug Administraton for the use of aspartame (commonly known as NutraSweet brand sweetener) in confectionery products, including both hard and soft candies.

"We have been working closely with several of our customers who are excited about possible new product applications, but ultimately it will be the consumer who decides how large an opportunity this represents," says Lauren Williams, president and COO of NutraSweet.

NutraSweet's Vice President of Food Accounts Mary Kay O'Connor says the company is pleased that the confections category has been opened to aspartame.
