Euan Semple's eclectic background has brought him into intimate contact with people from all points in the social spectrum. From a comprehensive school near Glasgow he went to St Andrews, where he rubbed shoulders with Old Etonians.
He earned pin money by labouring for a landscape gardener and, later, he played saxophone in working men's clubs. These experiences, together with his English degree, prepared him unexpectedly well for a career at the BBC. They also helped shape his strong views on what is important in life.
