Viviane Reding, the EU information society and media commissioner, has announced a European Commission co-ordinated digitisation strategy for the creation of a digital European library, linking the national libraries of member states.
Reding has also proposed that EU member states initiate national library digitisation schemes.
The first strategy stage is a documented set of actions, which EU information professionals are asked to comment on before 20 January 2006. These views will feed into a set of digitisation recommendations.
"The internet is the most powerful new tool we have had for storing and sharing information since the Gutenberg Press, so let's use it to make the material in Europe's libraries accessible to all," Reding said.
Lynne Brindley, British Library chief executive, said Reding's enthusiasm was welcome. "It is encouraging that the digitisation of libraries is given such high priority at the European Commission. The document is well articulated," she said.
