Mandel: It's amazing how Honda took the Civic Si ethic and brought it around to a modern and entertaining package. When the first Si was introduced, it wowed the crowd, but that was a crowd that didn't know what to expect. This does the same thing: It's a fun package that is tightly built and appears well put together.
This car prompted me to think about what cars provide the most smiles for the money, including the Mazda MX-5 and Mini Cooper S. There are a number of factors, both objective and subjective, that go into measuring the smile ratio and the fun factor: When you can wind an engine out to 8000 rpm while shifting through a short-throw shifter; when the car is something people look at and smile. These are the kinds of things that contribute to something greater that enthusiasts look for. The Civic Si has them in spades.
Luu: The new Si may appear to be an RSX Type S, but it doesn't feel that way. The engine pulls more smoothly and with more authority, especially when VTEC kicks in as you sweep past 6000 rpm. Credit a different intake manifold and a unique balance shaft for the smoother acceleration and more aggressive sound. The new fly-by-wire throttle provides instant response, but tends to hang on to the revs for a second when you lift off. Handling is spot-on and turn-in feel is precise, but I would like less electric steering boost.
Having recently driven the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and Dodge Neon SRT4, I'd take the Civic Si in a heartbeat. The Honda is the slowest of the trio, but the sum of its parts puts the car back at the top of the class.
Wong: Now this is a proper Si, much more so than that hatchback with the Si badge slapped on. The engine has plenty of pep, the gearbox is best-in-class, and the steering is quick and responsive.
