Byline: BILL McGUIRE
Seldom does a driver strike so hard and so fast. In his first Champ Car start Sebastien Bourdais qualified on the pole, and in his fourth start he scored his first win-one of three in 2003 that earned him the rookie-of-the-year title.
In his second year with Newman-Haas Racing Bourdais won half the 14 races on the schedule and the season championship; in 2005, six more wins and a second title.
Simply, Bourdais has owned the Champ Car World Series.
The quiet 26-year-old French-man, who looks and talks like a graduate student but drives like the devil, has created a riddle for himself: What is his next challenge?
"All my life I have always been starving for challenges," he says. "I do my best when I am in a war."
Bourdais' challenges have taken him around the world and behind the wheel of all different manner of race vehicles. Would he like to race in Formula One? Of course. How about a 24-hour endurance race? Been there, done that, and would like to do it again. Could he keep up with NASCAR's good ol' boys? Just ask grizzled roundy-round vet Mark Martin.
