Justin Wilson led 65 of 70 laps to win the final Champ Car event of the season in Mexico City. But that doesn't begin to describe the crazy race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez: This race featured as much action as you would normally find in a handful of Champ Car events.
Carl Russo's RuSport operation, now in its second year, is beginning to hit its stride. On the bigger, faster tracks like those in Portland and Edmonton, the team seems to have an especially good setup.
RuSport was pretty effective on the historic 2.786-mile road course in Mexico City. Wilson and teammate A.J. Allmendinger qualified first and second, with series champion Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy lined up third and fourth.
That alignment spelled trouble at the start, but the field managed to slip through the first turn without major incident. Moments later, however, Tracy was limping along with a cut tire, forcing him to pit for repairs and then to the rear of the field. He would charge through the pack to finish third, but not without contact and controversy.
Tracy caught a major break with the first caution flag on lap 20 when Ronnie Bremer hit the wall hard on the backstraight. As the field pitted, Tracy was cycled back up to the front, just behind local favorite Rodolfo Lavin.
On the lap-26 restart Tracy and Lavin tangled while Wilson slipped under both on the inside. Allmendinger attempted to follow, but Tracy ran him across the track and into the grass. Tracy was black-flagged and ordered to serve a drive-through penalty, not for the contact with Lavin but for the blatant block on Allmendinger.
Tracy got a chilly reception on the podium from second-place finisher and his former go-kart protege Allmendinger.
