The Energy ministry has announced it will phase out leaded fuels by the end of this year, in line with the Dakar Declaration of 2002.

Like many other African countries, Kenya ratified the treaty, showing its determination to join 85 per cent of the world that is lead-free.

This is a significant development meant to ensure a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for all.

It is comforting, therefore, that the country's refineries are well prepared for the transition.

In spite of these important developments, there is little information being provided on the need for and implications of the change. …
