Nov. 10--EDWARDSVILLE -- An Edwardsville lawyer has won reversal of a $657,000 verdict against him in a rare legal malpractice trial in Madison County.
The 5th Appellate Court in Mount Vernon threw out the judgment awarded in 2003 to the parents of a dead child and ordered a new trial, in Alexander County. They alleged that Edwardsville lawyer John Hopkins had bungled their wrongful-death case.
In reversing the verdict, the appellate judges ruled that former Madison County Circuit Judge Phillip J. Kardis erred when he denied Hopkins' motion to transfer the case to Alexander County. Kardis retired in September.
