ROCA: The Explorer has some bizarre ergonomics. The turn-signal stalk is mounted too high, so it's not an automatic reach. Door handles are novel-looking and easy enough to use, but the pull to close the door is in a weird spot and not easy to grab hold of. The door panels look cool, but I'm not impressed with different just to be different. Still, our wishes for a snazzier interior are met; the 2006 uses high-grade materials and has a quality feel. I like the look and the convenience of the gear shift on the console, and the useful tray atop the dash. It will take me awhile to get used to the aggressive F-150-like grille, but a lot of people were checking the Explorer out on my way home, so this newest version of America's best-selling SUV is not just blending in. That's good news for Ford.
