Forgive us if the secret is out of the bag by now, but we entered the week with Dan Wheldon's future hanging in the balance.
The Brit, who staged a remarkable 2005 by winning both the Indianapolis 500 and the Indy Racing League championship, saw his contract with Andretti Green Racing expire at midnight Oct. 31. And while Wheldon has been talking to potential new employers for months, it has only been this week that he could do so legally.
Signs point to the 27-year-old driver leaving AGR, his team of the past three seasons. Wheldon has been the sole focus of Ganassi Racing's IRL team (as a partner to Scott Dixon), and rumor has it he has an offer on the table from the Williams Formula One team. Pay and opportunities are at the heart of his planning.
Not only does Wheldon believe this next contract should reward him financially for his recent accomplishments, he would like to be positioned for long-term options. Chip Ganassi affords him an opportunity to try NASCAR in the future. And though an F1 job would be as a test driver in the short term, he knows the financial windfalls of the world's No. 1 series.
One driver who won't be leaving AGR is last year's IRL champion, Tony Kanaan, who is signed through the 2008 season. And now Kanaan has been cleared of wrongdoing in the closing seconds of the season-ending race at California Speedway.
The Brazilian appeared to lift off the throttle just ahead of the checkered flag. Teammate Dario Franchitti won by 0.1117 second.
Kanaan insisted he pushed the wrong button on his steering wheel. He got the one that slows the engine for pit stops rather than the one that delivers extra power.
