The NYSE composite posted a 0.4% decline Tuesday on lighter-than-average trade. The small-cap S&P 600 was down 0.7%.

Home builders led the session's decline. Luxury builder Toll Bros. fell 5.50, or 14%, to 33.91 on 3 1/2 times average volume after it lowered its fiscal 2006 sales forecast, citing milder demand. Other home builders followed suit.

William Lyon Homes shed 14, or 11%, to 117 on heavy trade. Analysts' consensus sees a 30% drop in third-quarter earnings to 3.15 cents a share when it reports Wednesday. Beazer Homes USA lost 3.36 to 59.98 on heavy trade. The stock is 11% off its 52-week high and has held up better than …
