THE AVERATEC AV1050-EB1 is one of the least-expensive ultraportables we've seen, yet its performance, surprisingly, matches that of much costlier models.

Our $1,379 test machine carried a 1.1GHz Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M 733 processor, 512MB of average-speed 333MHz DDR memory, and a big 80GB hard drive spinning at a zippy 5,400rpm. In addition, Averatec squeezes in a 10.6-inch, 1,280x800-resolution display and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, though no DVD burner. For cost-conscious shoppers, the company also offers a more affordable, low-octane Celeron model, the AV1020-ED1.
