Nov. 8--Tariff rates for 1,900 key products used for the electronics industry will be slashed under a programme aimed at improving the competitiveness of local manufacturers of electrical appliances and electronic products.

Somchai Sujjapongse, deputy director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said 80 percent of the products would have import tariffs cut to zero under the programme.

Tariffs on the remaining goods will be restructured under a three-rate programme used for other industrial sectors, with raw materials taxed at 1 percent, intermediate goods 5 percent and finished products 10 percent.
