Nov. 8--Despite soaring fuel prices, airfares in most classes from Thailand, India, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and for business class from New Zealand fell marginally in the third quarter of this year.

But modest increases were seen from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and for first-class and economy fares from New Zealand. Fares from Japan and Pakistan were unchanged or minimally changed, according to the American Express Airfare Index for the region.

Robert Tedesco, head of consulting services at American Express, said the majority of airlines had, however, instituted temporary fuel surcharges.
