Nov. 3--Thailand remains optimistic that trade talks in Hong Kong next month at a ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation will lead to substantial tariff cuts on farm products, according to Apiradi Tantraporn, the director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department.

Officials are also hopeful that the WTO's 148 members would set tariff peak rates for agricultural products. Some products, including rice, are now taxed as high as 1,000 percent by some countries.

Trade ministers from 148 countries will gather in Hong Kong from December 13-18 for the World Trade Organisation ministerial conference.
