Automated meter reading is essential in deregulated electricity markets, according to a leading European utilities consultant, but the UK trails other European Union countries in rolling out smart meters.
Colette Lewiner, senior vice president of consultancy Capgemini's global Energy Utilities and Chemicals practice, told Utility Week: "Automated meter reading is essential the more deregulated the market is. In Sweden it is compulsory, in Italy Enel has rolled it out, and it is likely to be rolled out soon in the Netherlands. In the UK there is a problem with bills."
Lewiner said profiling customers correctly was a way to enable switching, energy saving, and to allow better distribution across the grid.
