NYSE stocks fell moderately Tuesday as the S&P 500 lost 0.4% and the the small-cap S&P 600 eased 0.3%. Big Board volume was lower.
Medco Health Solutions gapped down below its 50- and 200-day moving averages after losing 6.70, or 12%, to 49.80 on close to six times its usual volume. The stock cleared a base Oct. 3 with a 55.10 buy point, but volume was light.
The mail-order pharmacy benefits manager reported flat Q3 earnings per share. It also put '06 EPS below analysts' expectations. Meanwhile, Banc of America Securities analyst Robert Willoughby said Medco's results "paled in comparison to those of Express Scripts."
Caremark Rx, another pharmacy benefits manager, fell 56 cents to 51.84, though it recovered from an intraday low of 50.25.
