TXU profit up, spinoff rejected
The No. 1 Texas electricity utility's operating earnings rose from $1.32 to $2.35 as revenue shot up 16% to $3.19 bil. TXU missed views of $2.46 on $3.57 bil, but it boosted its '05 outlook by 25 cents to $6.50-$6.70 a share; views were $6.58. The utility also said it does not plan to spin off its energy delivery business, as some anticipated. Shares tumbled 10% to 90.44.
Entergy earnings rise, stock dips
The power seller, whose New Orleans plant was forced into bankruptcy by Katrina and Rita, earned $1.65 in Q3, beating views by 7 cents and its year ago earnings by 19%. Entergy seeks funding of $2.5 bil-$3 bil while it recovers. It looks to insurance, higher rates and gov't help to pay for the damage. Sales rose 6% to $3.13 bil. Shares fell 3% to 68.64.
