Medicare bolsters Humana Q3
The health benefits provider earned 60 cents ex items, 9 cents above views and 15.4% more than the year-ago figure. Humana's revenue rose 20.1% to $3.82 bil, helped by its Medicare membership increasing by 35% to 503,100 members. The firm backed its '05 outlook of $1.86-$1.88 against views of $2.12. Shares rose 1% to 44.39.
Novartis buys Chiron for $5.1 bil
The Swiss drug maker, which already owns 42% of Chiron, boosted its previous offer by $600 mil to $45 a share. The deal gives Novartis access to the vaccine market, which is expected to show accelerated growth in coming years. Novartis rose 1% to 53.82. Chiron rose 1.5% to 44.14.
