Indexes Extend Friday's Gains
2Small caps led as the S&P 600 surged 1.7%. The Nasdaq rose 1.5%, the S&P 500 0.7% and the Dow industrials 0.4%. NYSE and Nasdaq volume ran higher. Economic data and M&A activity fueled gains. Telefonica Makes $31.4 Bil Buy
3The Spanish telecom giant will buy mobile phone operator O2 to expand in the 2 top European markets, Britain and Germany; Telefonica shares fell 3.5%. Meantime, Barrick Gold made an unsolicited $9.2 bil, or $20.50 a share, offer for Placer Dome.
