Online cash registers should be ringing early and often this holiday season.
Aggressive free-shipping promotions and an influx of new shoppers will help boost Internet sales by as much as 25% during the Christmas season, said two new research reports.
According to Jupiter Research, U.S. consumers will spend $26 billion online during the last two months of the year. That would be up 18% vs. the same period last year, the research firm said.
Forrester Research, meanwhile, pegs this year's online holiday sales at $18 billion, up 25% from last year. Unlike Jupiter, Forrester measures only the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
But its tally includes airline and hotel reservations -- two big-ticket items.
Both studies seem to point to another merry Christmas for online retailers, said Patti Freeman Evans, analyst for Jupiter Re-search. "The overall message is positive -- that online is going to have a nice, steady increase this year," she said.
