Oct. 29--Emily Sterling wanted her development along North 19th Street in Shockoe Bottom to be more than just a standard apartment building with parking underneath.

At an area bustling with history -- both with the city and her family -- Sterling said she wanted something "creative that respected the history of the neighborhood and fit in architecturally."

"I wanted to look at it and be proud of putting the family name on it," she said.

Construction has begun at the Sterling Row Condominiums at 110 N. 19th St., yards away from the old Shapiro's Furniture store her family used to own. The property is between Grace and Franklin streets.

"I really love this part of town," Sterling said. …
