Winston-Salem, N.C.-area unemployment rate drops to 5 percent.

Oct. 28--The Triad's unemployment rate reached a four-month low of 5 percent in September, spurred by an increase in hiring in government, health care and services, the N.C. Employment Security Commission reported yesterday.

The jobless rate for the 10-county combined statistical area was 5.5 percent in August. Economists said that by traditional definition, an unemployment rate of 5 percent signifies an economy in which everyone available for work has a job.

Forsyth County's unemployment rate dropped to 4.5 percent from 4.9 percent in August, the commission reported.
